If you want to keep the history between gp session, you need to set
in your .gprc:

histfile = "~/.gp_history"

     I suspect it is not a problem "between sessions" but in a single session.

  However histfile is a useful default whatsoever.

    Are there strange characters (OA, [A or similar) that appear when you type

  Up or Down arrows?
