What I want to know is,

(a) Is that caution out of date?

(b) If not, what do I have to do to work around the problem?

As far as I understand, you should install gcc from upstream source and
use it to build gmp, instead of using xcode gcc.

Really? I build gmp without problems on Mac OS X, both 10.4.11 and 10.5.2. I am using the gcc supplied with Xcode 2.5 (build 5370) in 10.4 and 3.0 (build 5465) in 10.5.

In addition, gmp builds with "native" gcc in Sage (<http:// www.sagemath.org>) on these systems. The Sage build does apply a couple of patches (Mac OS X 10.5 and some versions of Linux, and for some processors), but when I build gmp stand-alone, I just "configure" and "make".
