I maybe should have mentioned that I installed gmp-4.2.1 just
this morning; it (apparently) passed "make check".

I don't quite follow this. What file exactly do I edit the last line of?
(my gcc is a binary executable)



On a different track, your library /usr/local/lib/libgmp.a looks to be in a rather bad state. You should try to recompile and/or reinstall it.
