The same command works with f = x^3 + x^2 - 54*x - 169,
but not with x^3 + x^2 - 4*x + 1 (*** incorrect type in mattodiagonal)

In this case, it looks like whatever the problem is, it's not yours (and it appears to have been fixed between 2.0.17 (beta) and 2.2.8 (development CHANGES-1.981). At least, all three examples complete without error (correctness requires a bit of thought :-}).

Try updating to the latest (stable) release.
