thanks for your quick and detailed answer; in particular for carefully
explaining what is going on and why, and for nicely explaining the key
ideas of ECM to me! 

Nevertheless, for the naive casual user like me, I find it rather puzzling
that ECM suddenly appears to loop, after proceeding in regular steps of 
two from dsn=12 to dsn=70 -- and not a single word about such a possible
behaviour neither in the User's Guide nor in the Tutorial ... but maybe
that is much too specific a problem. 

What concerns the current factorization problem, not much progress thus
far; I am following your advice #(1). Concerning your advice #(2), I will
have to look for another SUN in our network with not too much load on it.
