the only thing I can say is that this variable has always been called
'auto-mode-alist and never 'auto-mode-list, which is why the 'setq
works by the way... It seems an exotic problem, so please do not take
this message into account, we'll sort that out and tell you what is
going on later. And Ottavio Rizzo can mail to me directly about the
problem.
