on amd64 arch (SUSE 9.1, SLES8) the current cvs  does build with gcc 3.3.x
and gcc 3.4.x without setting -fno-strict-aliasing, but the make bench
fails at the level of nfields.
However setting -fno-strict-aliasing solves the problem.
