Theoretically forbidden, but internally allowed [ generic sort is used by
many routines, in many different guises... ]. So type checking was rather
inconsistent.

I've fixed the GP wrapper routine so that it uses the correct comparison
functions, and removed a number of hardwired assumptions from gen_sort().
