It's plain TeX. You should be able to compile it using tex and not
latex:

Thanks for your reply. I got an off-list response to this effect already. I'm using TeXShop on Mac OS X, and all I do is push buttons :-}. Since LaTeX is the default, that's what I got. I need to learn a little more about this aspect of the package, clearly...
