You might want to do exactly that.

Try to edit the Makefile, and change the optimization level from -O3 to -O2,
-O1 for this specific file (buch2.c).

You might want to try a CVS snapshot (or unstable release 2.2.7). Since this
(quite correct) code has been completely rewritten, it might not trigger this
particular optimizer bug.
